It wasn't explicitly written in the bile whether Jesus went to hell when he died. however, there are many scriptures that pointed to the fact that Jesus Christ went to hell.

So, in this post were are going to be looking into some scriptures about Jesus' descent to hell. These 12 Bible verses will definitely be an eye opener about the mystery of Jesus' descent to Hades, and will also help you to make an informed decision as touching the situation.

Where did Jesus Go When He died?

I do not believe that Jesus went to Hell when He died. When I searched the scriptures very well, I came to the understanding that Jesus actually went to Hades and not Hell. Many for so long have held on to the belief that Jesus went down to hell, and spent 3 days there.
This is not entirely true. Jesus did not go down to hell, he rather went to Hades?

12 Jesus go to hell scriptures with commentary

1. 1 Peter 3:18-20 - "For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God. He was put to death in the body but made alive in the Spirit. After being made alive, he went and made a proclamation to the imprisoned spirits— to those who were disobedient long ago when God waited patiently in the days of Noah while the ark was being built."

2. 2. Peter 4:6 For this reason the gospel was preached also to those who are dead, that they might be judged according to men in the flesh, but live according to God in the spirit.

Commentary: When Jesus Died, He went to Hades to Prach to the prisoners of old that were held captive there. remember the scripture says "The captives of the mighty shall be delivered". So this verse is one of the verses that show that Jesus went to hell/hades when He died.

3. Ephesians 4:8-10 - "This is why it says: 'When he ascended on high, he took many captives and gave gifts to his people.' (What does 'he ascended' mean except that he also descended to the lower, earthly regions? He who descended is the very one who ascended higher than all the heavens, in order to fill the whole universe.)"

Commentary: This Verse is yet another one that pointed to the fact that Jesus went to hell. It says, He also descended to the lower part of the earth, some other version says, the abyss, some uses hades, etc. particular

4. Romans 10:6-7 - "But the righteousness that is by faith says: 'Do not say in your heart, ‘Who will ascend into heaven?’’ (that is, to bring Christ down) 'or ‘Who will descend into the deep?’’ (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead)."

Commentary: This verse by Apostle Paul is also a pointer to the fact that Jesus Christ descends to Hades after death.

5. 1 Peter 4:6 - "For this is the reason the gospel was preached even to those who are now dead, so that they might be judged according to human standards in regard to the body, but live according to God in regard to the spirit."

Commentary: Apostle Peter seems to understand the mystery of Jesus' descent into the lower part of the earth. He made it clear that Jesus went to hell to preach to the gospel to the dead. And This shows that God did not only care for the living, he want the salvation of the dead too.

6. Psalm 16:10 - "Because you will not abandon me to the realm of the dead, nor will you let your faithful one see decay."

7. Acts 2:24,27 Whom God hath raised up, having loosed the pains of death: because it was not possible that he should be holden of it. Because thou wilt not leave my soul in hell, neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption.

Commentary: This is David speaking prophetically by revelation, what is to happen after He died or after Jesus died. Many believe that this verse is meant for Jesus' descent, while some believe it's for David, who was later saved by Jesus. Whatever the case, it shows that Jesus Christ actually descends to the lower part of the earth.

8. Colossians 2:15 - "And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross."

9. Hebrews 2:14-15 - "Since the children have flesh and blood, he too shared in their humanity so that by his death he might break the power of him who holds the power of death—that is, the devil—and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death."

Commentary: Many held the belief that Jesus fought with death and sin, principalities and powers, etc. when he went to hell.

11. Matthew 21: 52 And the graves were opened, and many bodies of the saints which slept arose,

Commentary: Many people believe that, after Jesus had won the battle with death, sin, principalities, and powers, as recorded in Colossians 2:15, the saints that arose from the graves are spoils (captives or prisoners) that were held down by the devil.
