As newsman Clarence W. Hall followed American troops through Okinawa in 1945. He and his jeep driver came upon a small town as a beautiful example of Christian community. He wrote we had seen other Okinawa villages..., down at the heels and despairing; by contrast, this one shows like a diamond in a dung heap. Everywhere, we were greeted by smiles and dignified bows. Proudly, the old men shows us their spotless homes, their terraced fields... Their storehouses and graneries, their priced sugar mill.

Hall saw no jails and no drunken-ness, and divorce was unknown. He learned a missionary had come there 30 years earlier. He had led two elderly townspeople to Christ and left them with a Japanese Bible. These new believers studied the Scriptures and started leading their fellow villagers to Jesus. Hall's jeep driver remarked, "So this is what comes out of only a Bible and a couple of old guys who wanted to live like Jesus."

Acts 4:32-37 Now the multitude of those who believed were of one heart and one soul; neither did anyone say that any of the things he possessed was his own, but they had all things in common. And with great power the apostles gave witness to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus. And great grace was upon them all. Nor was there anyone among them who lacked; for all who were possessors of lands or houses sold them, and brought the proceeds of the things that were sold, and laid [them] at the apostles' feet; and they distributed to each as anyone had need. And Joses, who was also named Barnabas by the apostles (which is translated Son of Encouragement), a Levite of the country of Cyprus, having land, sold [it,] and brought the money and laid [it] at the apostles' feet.

That's is the transforming power of the Word of God. For it is by the Word we live, act, and have our being.
For this reason, Apostle Peter advices his followers to desire the sincere milk of the Word for therein can he grow into perfection 1 Peter 2;2. And in another place, Apostle Paul admonishes Timothy to study in other to show himself approved of God… rightly dividing the word of truth. 2Timothy 2:15

As Christians, the word of God is the final source of Authority that we have, for traditions, experience, and imaginations will at some point in time lead to error and contradicts the message of God. For this purpose it is required of us as Christians to stick to the word of God, study and knows the mind of God per time.

The beautiful story of the transformed community is a testimony of the Efficacy power of God's Word which leads to salvation through faith in Christ, creating a "special people" who love one another, exhort one another, and serve God together.

We need to pray that our churches will be an example of God's power to a watching world. -Herb Vander Lugt
